SOCIAL SYNDICALISM (ENG)

As the global economy has become more and more dominated by the financial sector, we are seeing banks, hedge funds, private equity firms and right wing deregulation emerge as common villains across a broad swathe of campaigns. For example, Blackstone, the world’s largest private equity firm, is now the largest landlord in the world. It’s driving up the cost of housing around the globe, it has launched the world’s largest investment fund to privatize infrastructure projects and it has very close ties to repressive regimes.

This meeting aims to share strategies amongst organizers and activists waging innovative campaigns that are fighting finance capitalism. Some of the questions to be explored include: What are the most effective organising approaches? How are community, housing rights and labour organizations building power across different movements? How to work with progressive local governments to regulate and win rights? How to build power and support each other to win?

The discussion will feature campaigns from Spain, Puerto Rico, South Africa, France and the United States. Participating organizations include: Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca Barcelona, Sindicat de Llogateres, Inquilinxs Unidxs, DESC, Action Center for Race and the Economy (ACRE), New York Communities for Change, Santander Campaign Puerto Rico, Atelier Populaire d’Urbanisme de Grénoble (France), Alliance for Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), Cape Town’s Reclaim the City (RTC) – South Africa.

This event is open to participants registered at the Fearless Cities Conference.
